Abstract
We discuss issues relating to the compression system in the
distributed image repository of the DISCWorld system. The distributed
image repository is intended for the distributed storage and retrieval
of large scientific imagery datasets. Given the large and regular
nature of this type of data there is considerable scope for the
application of data compression techniques in the system to reduce
storage requirements and data transmission times.
We develop a framework for modeling the performance of the compression
system within the DISCWorld, with the intention of applying this to
and in the design of the system. The model is applied to two example
situations to illustrate its application in the design and
optimisation of the repository.
