Presented at a planning forum meeting to which ACSys/RDN
collaborators were invited, at ANU, Canberra on 23rd September 1997.
Abstract
The On-line Data Archives (OLDA) Program is managed by the Advanced
Computational Systems (ACSys) Cooperative Research Centre (CRC).
Projects are funded by both ACSys and by the Research Data Networks
CRC. This talk presents an overview of recent OLDA projects in
applying and demonstrating distributed and high-performance computing
(DHPC) technology. Current projects focus on earth observation
applications, geographic and image data archives, as well as software
infrastructure development for providing access to data and processing
capabilities on-demand. Some key issues in the design of a DHPC
software infrastructure for image archive based applications are
discussed. These issues include integration of legacy applications
and supercomputer systems. Participating organisations in OLDA
include: the Soil and Land Management CRC, CSIRO, Agrecon, Flinders
University, Adelaide University, ANU, Sydney VisLab, and the
Australian Bureau of Meteorology.
This talk focuses on the research infrastructure being developed under the
OLDA program and the middleware software system based on Java and CORBA.
