Abstract
This is a review of the state of high performance computing, with a focus on
how parallel computing has evolved into distributed computing. Contents
include a look at the name of the HPC field; applications that have shifted
emphasis; the cornerstones of HPC; National Programmes and some software
systems and projects for distributed and high-performance computing.
