Bioinformatics applications typically search large data sets and require significant compute power so bioinformaticians are looking at compute grids as a solution. However, many of the current grid tools are targeted at grid-savvy users who need to compile and run custom scientific code, while bioinformaticians run stable, developed applications and merely wish to do so on a larger scale. By combining several grid tools, this project developed a framework, GEBAF, to deploy the large number of bioinformatics applications and databases across the developing Australian National Grid infrastructure, initially focusing on the DNA sequence analysis tool BLAST.
