Simulating Resource Discovery Algorithms in Computational Grids

Archived 9 September 2002.
Abstract
As the global grid continues to grow in size and complexity, the
problem of discovering resources becomes ever more acute. The resource
discovery problem involves grid-participating nodes exchanging
metadata that describes the services and data available to their peer
nodes. In addition nodes maintain internal caches of information they
have discovered. We describe our mechanisms for knowledge propagation
througout a potentially global grid and discuss mechanisms by which
nodes are able to make sensible local decisions without complete
system state information. We have built a prototype framework with
which to experiment with different algorithms for cache maintenance
and system state propagation.
Keywords:
resource discovery; global grid; knowledge propagation; global state.
