Abstract
The Distributed and High Performance Computing Group was formed in
1997 in the Department of Computer Science at the University of
Adelaide in South Australia. The group had its origins in the
Distributed High Performance Computing Project funded under the
Australia Commonwealth Governments Research Data Networks Cooperative
Research Centre but has since gone on to become an international
collaboration between Adelaide University and the
University of Wales at Bangor.
This note is a reflective summary of the activities in distributed and
high performance computing over the last few years of the millenium as
embodied in the first one hundred technical reports of the group.
In the period described the group carried out work on broadband
networks; metacomputing; on line data archives; middleware; cluster
computing systems; problem solving environments; and various
applications. We now look ahead to the next millenium and the
challenging problems in distributed systems that are being posed by
computational grid systems and electronic commerce applications.
