About the NPAC/OLDA Visible Human Viewer
The
NPAC/OLDA Visible Human Viewer
has been updated to version 2.0
as of December 1997.
Programming for version 2 was by Karlie Hutchens,
with design by Paul Coddington and Karlie Hutchens.
This work was supported by the
On-Line Data Archives
project, which is co-hosted by the
Research Data Networks (RDN) and
Advanced Computing Systems (ACSys)
Co-operative Research Centres (CRCs).
The work was done by the
Distributed and High-Performance
Computing Group in the
Department of Computer
Science
at the
University of Adelaide.
The original applet (version 1) was programmed by
Michael Chang,
and designed by
Paul Coddington and
Michael Chang.
This work was supported by the
Northeast Parallel Architectures
Center at
Syracuse University.
Processing of the images was by
Paul Coddington and
Michael Chang.

The following changes and additions have been made to the Visible Human
Viewer in version 2.0:
-
Added Visible Woman images from the
Visible Human Project of the
U.S. National Library of Medicine.
The raw Visible Woman data has higher resolution than the Visible Man in
the vertical direction (1/3mm slices rather than 1mm), however in this
implementation of the viewer we have used the same resolution as for the
Visible Man. This may be changed in the future (if we have more time and
disk space!).
-
Added MRI and CT images (these are not yet available, but may be
added in the future).
-
Added the capability to select a smaller region to be cropped out of
the image before it is downloaded, which allows much faster downloading
of high resolution sagittal and coronal images for a specific area of
interest such as the head or chest.
The region is selected by clicking and dragging the mouse over
the desired area of the preview image.
-
Modified the user interface to incorporate these extra features, and
to make it more intuitive.
Also made the applet shorter and wider,
for easier use on smaller (640x480) monitors,
by placing the buttons to the side.
-
Updated the User Guide.
-
Created a new version of the applet for Java version 1.1.
Since many Web browsers do not yet support this new version of Java,
the applet is written so that it first tests for which version of Java
is supported by the browser, and the correct version of the applet is
then downloaded.
-
Some MPEG videos of image slices have also been
created.
