DHPC Commercialisation and Development
The group carries out contract research, development and training and
education work for commercial partners and collaborators.
Some of the services we provide include:
- Contract research into systems design and other pre-competitive
investigative work;
- Contract development of code prototypes and other pre-production
systems development and integration;
- Presentation and development of customised training modules in
distributed programming - especially
Java - and also computational science.
Staff in the DHPC group have experience in providing these services to
organisations world-wide including: The Australian Defence Science and
Technology Organisation; The UK Atomic Energy Authority; The UK Home
Office; The UK Meteorological Office; Shell UK; Rolls Royce; British
Aerospace; BT (British Telecom); The US Air Force, the US Department
of Defense and various SME's in the areas of financial price modeling,
Web-based services and decision support;
Our core expertise lies in the following areas:
- Distributed Computing - we can advise on the use of Java and
CORBA and other middleware technologies for integration of local and
wide area distributed systems. We are developing a middleware
infrastructure to meet some of the current defficiancies of present
technologies in this area.
- Parallel computing (message passing, data parallelism and shared
memory parallelism) - we have carried out many projects porting codes to
parallel computer systems and can advise on best practice methodology
and design issues.
- Beowulf cluster computing - we have designed and constructed two
of the most powerful supercomputer clusters in the world.
- Large-scale Data Archives - we have built large image repositories
for satellite and other reconnaissance imagery, and software to access
distributed geospatial data archives.
- Internet and Web-based services - we have developed a number of
advanced technological systems for client and server side operations.
