Advanced Computational Systems (ACSys) Cooperative Research Centre (CRC)

The ACSys CRC is one of of a number of Information Technology Cooperative Research Centres funded under the Australian Commonwealth Government's CRC Program. As well as having its own budget and partners it also manages projects funded by the Research Data Networks CRC.

CRC's are collaborative organisations set up to promote interaction between Australian Industry and Academia and to stimulate Australian Research, Development, Commercial Activities and Education. ACSys is working on information technologies for ``managing the information explosion'' with programs exploring: Advanced Server Technologies (AST); Data Mining (DM); Digital Media Libraries (DML); On-Line Data Archives (OLDA); and Virtual Environments (VE).

ACSys was established in 1993 and has an annual budget of over $9 million and is an unincorporated collaborative venture between: The Australian National University (ANU), The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) Australia, Fujitsu Australia and Sun Microsystems Australia with links with a number of other organisations, most notably the Distributed and High-Performance Computing Group at the University of Adelaide from which the On-Line Data Archives (OLDA) Program is operated.

ACSys operates at a number of geographically separate sites around Australia and is headquartered in the Research School of Information Science and Engineering (RSISE) on the ANU Campus in Canberra, with staff located at CSIRO in Canberra, CSIRO in Sydney, and at the Department of Computer Science in the University of Adelaide.

ACSys has achieved a number of research and development successes descibed on the pages below, and is also training the next generation of scientists and software engineers in the use of advanced processing, storage and communications systems through its education program.
